Lothal excavation tragedy: IIT-Delhi researcher Surabhi Verma killed in soil collapse

New Delhi: In a tragic incident reported from Gujarat, an IIT-Delhi researcher died after part of a pit they went inside for archaeological survey, collapsed on them. The deceased IIT-Delhi researcher has been identified as 24-year-old Surabhi Verma. The incident took place at Lothal site on Wednesday.

Three other members from the research teams were also injured in the incident. The incident happened when a team from IIT-Delhi and IIT Gandhinagar visited the site to collect soil samples for survey.

Details of the Incident

Lothal is said to be a site of ancient Indus Valley Civilisation. The site is 80-km away from Ahmedabad. The woman researcher was killed after she entered a 10-feet deep along with other team members.

As Surabhi descended into the pit along with her other teammate, a professor named Yama Dixit, the soil suddenly collapsed on them.
