Uttarakhand Weather Update: Monsoon intensifies; Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh are under heavy rain alert

Dehradun: The monsoon has firmly gripped Uttarakhand, bringing widespread rainfall across the state and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue alerts for heavy to very heavy rain in several districts.

While the showers have brought relief from the scorching summer heat, they have also triggered landslides and rain-related accidents, raising concerns about safety in the hill regions.

According to the IMD, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are likely to occur at most places in Champawat, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Nainital, Dehradun, and Udham Singh Nagar, and at many locations in the remaining districts. The hilly districts of Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh are under a heavy rain alert, with the possibility of intense downpours at isolated spots.

Rain activity is expected to intensify over the next few days

The Meteorological Center in Dehradun confirmed that the monsoon has arrived earlier than usual this year and is progressing rapidly. “Rain activity is expected to intensify over the next few days,” an official said, adding that rainfall this season may exceed normal levels by 10–15%, likely due to climate change.

Landslides in Yamunotri and Badrinath Highway

The impact of the monsoon is already being felt. In Yamunotri Dham and Badrinath highway, tragic incidents occurred when mountain debris fell on a group of pilgrims, resulting in two deaths and multiple injuries. The event has highlighted the vulnerability of pilgrimage routes during the rainy season and the urgent need for caution.

In Dehradun, intermittent rain and strong winds have been reported, with cloudy skies dominating the day. Similar conditions are expected in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, where gusty winds may accompany the showers. The IMD has warned that rain intensity may increase from June 25, particularly in the mountainous regions.

Authorities have urged pilgrims to stay updated on weather forecasts

The Char Dham Yatra continues amid the challenging weather, but authorities have urged pilgrims to stay updated on weather forecasts and avoid travel during heavy rain. Landslide-prone areas remain under close watch, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is on alert for emergency deployments.

Risk of flash floods, road blockages, and landslides remains high

Meanwhile, the rainfall has brought a noticeable drop in temperatures, offering temporary relief from the humid heat that had gripped the plains. However, the risk of flash floods, road blockages, and landslides remains high, especially in vulnerable zones.

As the monsoon deepens its hold over Uttarakhand, the administration is focusing on disaster preparedness and public awareness. Travelers and residents are advised to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary movement in high-risk areas.
