A unique and one-of-its-kind, the Shillong Teer lottery game is played in Meghalaya every day. It is organised by the Khasi Hills Archery Sports Association (KHASA) and revolves around archery. The daily event takes place at the Shillong Polo Stadium and comes under the regulations of the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax Act. The number of arrows, or “teers,” that successfully hit the target determines the winner.
Those who wish to participate can get tickets at 5,000 designated counters that are located across 11 districts in Meghalaya. Every player starts with 50 arrows. Each participant is given 30 arrows in the first round and 20 in the second round. The player who successfully hits the most number of arrows on target is declared the winner. In 13 Indian states, lottery games are legal, Meghalaya being one of them. The others are Goa, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Nagaland, and Manipur.
