Ahmedabad: In a tragic incident, Air India flight with 242 people onboard crashed near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday. As per the Ahmedabad Police, one person who survived the incident has been admitted to a hospital for treatment. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also in the flight which had taken off for London, shortly before the devastating accident.
As per reports, Rupani’s wife, Anjali Rupani, is currently staying in London. The former Chief Minister was believed to be going to London to bring her back.
Who was Vijay Rupani?
A seasoned politician, Rupani was the 16 Chief Minister of Gujarat from August 2016 to September 2021. A senior BJP leader in the state, he was born on August 2, 1956, in Rangoon (now Yangon, Myanmar).
Rupani’s political career has spanned over several decades. Hde has held various positions during his political career including Mayor of Rajkot in 1996–1997. He was also the Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from 2006to 2012. In Gujarat, he also served as ministers in various departments including transport, labour, and water supply.
Leaders condole Rupani’s demise
Rupani also represented Rajkot West constituency in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. He was also the president of the Gujarat BJP before becoming Chief Minister. “Saddened by the tragic demise of former Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Vijay Rupani Ji in the unfortunate plane crash near Ahmedabad. His unwavering commitment to public service will always be remembered. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones in this moment of grief,” Former Punjab CM Amarinder Singh wrote on X.
Added BJP leader Sunil Jakhar, “Extremely saddened and heartbroken to learn that Sh.Vijay Rupani ji was on board the ill fated Air India plane which crashed today in Ahmedabad today. His contributions as Gujarat CM would be cherished forever. He was a humble and compassionate human being and a grassroots leader. I have had the lucky fortune of being associated with him as he was incharge of Punjab BJP. He was a real “gentleman politician”. Not only has Gujrat lost a great leader in him but it is a personal loss for me, as I found his gentle and soft demeanour so endearing. His sagacity and simplicity in public life will be missed. RIP Rupani ji.”
