Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had an angry response when questioned about the steps the Congress government is taking after the stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium, which killed 11 people. He told reporters, “An inquiry has been ordered. Cases have been filed. People have been suspended.”

When questioned by reporters, Shivakumar said, “The Opposition party was asking for a judicial inquiry, immediately. My honourable Chief Minister was kind enough to announce a judicial inquiry.”
He in fact questioned reporters on what more the government can do. He told reporters that a judicial enquiry and a financial enquiry were already underway. The government has done its best. “What more can a government do?”, he asked.
At least 11 people, mostly youngsters, were killed after a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. A felicitation ceremony for the players of Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket team was going on at the stadium when the tragedy unfolded iutside the gates of the stadium. The team had won its maiden IPL title and the city was out to celebrate, but tragedy struck and turned the celebrations into mourning.
Following the tragic incident, Bengaluru Police Commissioner, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s political secretary K Govindaraj and head of the information department, Hemant Nimbalkar were suspended. Even then, the Congress government of the state came under sharp criticism from the Opposition parties.
The Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra alleged that the government acted only when pressure was put on them. He also alleged that the state police were made a “scapegoat” in the entire matter.
Meanwhile, Shivakumar defended his government saying that they will come up with a plan of action, to avoid a repeat of such incidents in future. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah criticised the BJP for trying to politicise the tragic stampede.
The stampede killed 11 people and left at least 46 others injured.
