Sawai Madhopur: Torrential rains in Sawai Madhopur district triggered a tragic incident when a boat carrying around 8-10 people capsized in the strong currents of Soorwal Dam.
According to officials, the boat got trapped in the overflowing sheet of water before overturning. Local villagers immediately rushed to the spot and managed to rescue 3-4 passengers. However, several others remain missing, and the boat has not yet been traced. The strong water flow is hampering rescue efforts.
The district administration, along with NDRF and SDRF teams, has launched a large-scale search and relief operation. “Efforts are being made to locate the missing persons, but the fast current is making operations extremely challenging,” an official said.
Rivers flooded due to heavy rain
The heavy rainfall, which began late at night, has created havoc across the district. Major rivers, including Chambal, Banas, Galwa, Morel, and Gambhira, are flowing above danger levels, while Latia Nala overflowed, flooding residential colonies such as Rajbagh, Mirza Mohalla, and Khatik Mohalla. Hundreds of homes and shops have been submerged, leaving property damaged.
In another blow, the collapse of a culvert on NH-552 at Ughad has cut off road connectivity between hundreds of villages in Khandar sub-division and the district headquarters. Road links between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have also been disrupted.
District Collector Kana Ram, who is supervising ground operations, has appealed to residents to stay away from rivers, streams, and dams. With all major reservoirs in the district overflowing, dozens of villages remain at risk of flooding.
