Bengaluru molestation case: Karnataka minister says his statement was ‘distorted’

New Delhi: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday said that his his statement was taken out of proportion over the recent case of a woman being molested in Bengaluru. He said that he is committed to ensure the safety of women in the state and asked apology if his remarks hurt anyone.

The recent incident of a woman walking in Suddaguntepalya on April 3 led to a horrific act. A man approached two women in the isolated narrow lane and, in a video captured through CCTV cameras, he pushed one of the women against a wall before running away from the spot.

On Monday, though the Karnataka Home Minister assured that the Bengaluru police were monitoring closely to the matter and ensuring such incidents don’t take place further, the mention of ‘such incidents do take place’ caught the attention of public and backlash followed accordingly.

“But such incidents do take place once in a while in such a big city. For that, we will take action as per law,” Parameshwara remarked.

This led to the opposition BJP asking Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for Parameshwara’s resignation. Even the National Commission for Women (NCW) in India condemned the remarks of the Karnataka top minister.

The Koratagere-elected MLA on Tuesday clarified his recent remarks and said he never intended to hurt anyone.

“Yesterday my statement has not been properly understood by you (media), and other platforms too have understood it differently. I’m always for women’s protection,” he told reporters in Bengaluru.

He said the statement was distorted and asserted that he was in support for women’s protection while issuing an unconditional apology to the women citizens of the state.

“….distorting some statement and speaking about me is not right. I believe and have taken several measures for the protection of women — our sisters and mothers. If there are any issues (concerning women’s safety), I have made officials in the department responsible. So my statement should not be projected by distorting it.”

“I’m not saying this for those from the BJP, who are doing politics. If my statement has caused pain to anyone — our sisters, mothers, I express regret. But there is no need to take it to different platforms by projectingit in a different way,” he added.
