New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday took former Haryana Congress MLA Dharam Singh Chhoker into custody in a cheating case. He had been absconding for some time. The agency had been asking him to join the probe since May last year.
As per officials, Choker and his sons Sikandar and Vikas, have been accused of cheating over 1,500 home buyers and garnering nearly Rs 500 crore funds from them through their real estate firms under Mahira Group.
Ex-MLA held from Delhi hotel
The 61-year-old former MLA was arrested at the Shangri-La hotel in New Delhi on Sunday at around 10 PM. The ED officials came to know of his presence just a couple of hours back, following which they reached the hotel to nab him. The courts had earlier issued seven non-bailable warrants against him. Apart from these, a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court had also proclaimed him as an offender.

Sharing further details, officials said that on being confronted, Choker tried to escape towards the exit along with his security officer. However, he was chased and nabbed. He even tried to hit ED officials and hotel staff during the scuffle, the officials said further. He was taken to ED headquarters and was formally arrested at 2:37 AM on Monday. He was later sent to six-day ED custody.
While probing the case, ED found that Chhoker was the director in at least six Mahira Group companies. The group was working on several projects in sectors 68, 103, and 104 of Gurugram. During the hearing in court, the ED said that these funds were used during his daughter’s marriage. The agency further said that the former MLA did not respond to two summonses issued to him for questioning, after which seven arrest warrants were issued against him by the courts.
