New Delhi: Tragedy struck again on Mumbai’s Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), on Wednesday morning as a man identified as Philip Shah jumped to his death from the bridge.
This marks the second suicide in the last four days, raising serious concerns about mental health and the need for immediate action to prevent further tragedies.
Shah, a resident of Mumbai’s Matunga area, stopped his car on the bridge and took his own life. The reason behind his extreme action remains unknown as authorities continue their investigation. The rescuers have launched operation to rescue his body.
This incident follows the suicide of Sushant Chakraborty, a bank manager, who also jumped from the bridge on Monday. Chakraborty’s body was recovered on Tuesday. In both cases, the individuals drove their vehicles to the bridge and locked them before jumping.
Following these tragic events, the Navi Mumbai police have urged the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to install safety nets on the bridge to deter further suicides and attempted suicides. The 21.8km long bridge, spanning 16.5km over the sea, presents a dangerous vantage point for those aiming to take their lives.
Mental health experts in India have highlighted the need for increased awareness and support to address the growing number of suicides.
Following several suicides and attempted suicides on the Atal Setu, Navi Mumbai police have requested MMRDA to install safety nets on the bridge. The 21.8km long Atal Setu spans about 16.5km over the sea and 5.5km on land.
