Aligarh: A controversy has erupted at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) after a notice issued on Sunday announcing the serving of ‘beef biryani’ at Sir Shah Suleman Hall. The notice quickly went viral on social media, sparking protests. BJP leader Nishit Sharma criticised the university administration’s role, calling it “shameful.” The notice mentioned that ‘beef biryani’ would replace chicken biryani at the hall, prompting accusations that the administration was supporting fundamentalist elements.
After the issue gained attention, AMU clarified that the announcement was a typographical error and issued a show cause notice to those responsible. This is not the first time beef has sparked controversy at AMU—back in 2016, a similar uproar occurred when beef biryani was introduced to the menu. The university then said that it had served buffalo meat, not beef.
What is the difference between beef and buff ?
In simple terms, beef refers to the meat of cows, calves, ox and bulls whereas buffalo meat (or buff meat) specifically refers to the meat of buffalo. The controversy at AMU partly stems from the fact that cow slaughter is illegal in Uttar Pradesh, as well as in several other states, including Haryana, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and others, with penalties ranging from jail sentences to fines for violations.
Buff , on the other hand, is the meat of a buffalo and is often called “red beef” due to its dark red colour, which results from a high amount of myoglobin. While similar in appearance, taste and nutritional content, it is distinct from beef. In India and Nepal, it is known as “buff,” while in Indonesia, it is referred to as “carabeef.”
How did the controversy escalate earlier?
The controversy over beef at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) escalated in February 2016, when reports emerged of beef biryani being served on campus. In response, BJP leaders in Aligarh issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the police to take action against the alleged incident.
Local BJP leaders, including the then mayor of Aligarh, met with the SP (City) on Saturday to file a complaint and demand an investigation. AMU, however, clarified that the biryani contained only buffalo meat and dismissed the allegations as an effort to stir up communal tensions.
