New Delhi: After the BJP’s decisive win in the Delhi elections, newly-elected MLA Mohan Singh Bisht from Mustafabad announced plans to rename the area to either Shivpuri or Shiv Vihar. Bisht, who won the seat with 85,215 votes, triumphed over his closest rival, AAP’s Adeel Ahmed Khan, by a margin of 17,578 votes. “We will conduct a census and rename Mustafabad to either Shiv Vihar or Shivpuri, as promised. I stand by my commitment to do this,” Bisht said.

Mustafabad, once considered a Muslim-majority seat, was previously held by AAP’s Haji Yunus in 2020. In the 2025 Assembly elections, the constituency saw a four-way contest. While the BJP capitalised on the “Bisht brand,” Congress, AAP and AIMIM focused on caste-based strategies.

AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, fielded Tahir Hussain, a controversial figure with multiple riot-related charges, who garnered 33,474 votes but finished in third place. Congress’s Ali Mehdi received 11,763 votes, securing the fourth position. Bisht, who had previously served five terms from Karawal Nagar, was a surprise candidate for Mustafabad in a major reshuffling by the BJP. He credited his victory to the support of the party’s senior leadership and promised comprehensive development for his new constituency.

Delhi Assembly polls

After being out of power in Delhi for almost 30 years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday, ending its over 10-year rule. The BJP was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah. After a poor performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where it won only 240 seats, the BJP is now gaining momentum, with its Delhi win adding to victories in Haryana and Maharashtra. This victory in Delhi is especially important for the BJP, marking a strong return to a state where it had been out of power for years. For AAP, the defeat is a big blow, as it not only failed to win a fourth consecutive term but also saw almost all of its top leaders lose.
