New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday (January 15), while wondering at the submission made by the Punjab government that the health parameters of framer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been sitting on indefinite fast for over 49 days at the Khanduri border, asked the state government to hand over his medical reports for an opinion from the medical board of AIIMS.

A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh directed the Punjab government to submit Dallewal’s health report to the Supreme Court registrar during the course of the day to obtain the medical opinion from the AIIMS.

What did the Punjab government submit?

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who represented the Punjab government, at the start of the hearing into the matter, told the bench that Dallewal’s health parameters are improving, to which the bench asked how the health parameters of a person who was sitting on an indefinite fast for the last 49 days was improving.

Sibal later clarified that Dallewal’s parameters are stable. He further told the bench that a hospital has been set up 10 meters away from the protest site and that authorities concerned are in deliberations with the protesting farmers and Centre’s representatives are also meeting the protesting farmers. There have been some progress in the matter since the meeting with apex court-appointed high-powered committee and we are hopeful of a solution, he added.

The bench, taking note of the submissions, posted the matter for further hearing on January 29.

The bench was earlier informed that a delegation of protesting farmers, who have been protesting at the Khanduri border, have agreed to meet the top-court-appointed high-powered committee and authorities were expecting some breakthrough.

Apex Court has expressed its concern on Dallewal’s health conditions

Dallewal has been sitting on indefinite fast since November 26 and he earlier refused to take medical aid offered by the Punjab government. The apex court, amidst his deteriorating health condition, earlier expressed its concerns on his health condition and directed the Punjab government to provide adequate, immediate medical aid to him without forcing him to break fast.
