New Delhi: Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 70-run knock was the only silver lining in India’s embarrassing defeat against New Zealand in the second Test match in Pune. While the entire batting line up succumbed in front of the Kiwis, Jaiswal tackled all the tricky balls to register a commendable knock in the match. By adding significant runs to his overall Test score this year, the Indian sensation adding a special feather to his cap.

Jaiswal became the third Indian batter and seventh overall in world cricket to score more than 1000 runs in Tests at home in a calendar year. He joined the elite league of India players featuring Sunil Gavaskar and overtook legendary Indian batter Gundappa Vishwanath. He also became the first Indian opener to reach 1000 runs in a calendar year and the first Indian batter to achieve the feat in 2024.

Jaiswal breaks Vishwanath’s record

Gundappa Vishwanath, until now, held the record for hitting 1,047 runs  with four hundreds and three half-centuries in the year 1979. Young Jaiswal broke his record as his special half-century in Pune took him to 1056 runs at an average of 66.00 with two hundreds and seven fifties in 2024. He can add to this tally as the third and final Test against the Kiwis is yet to come and then the crucial Border-Gavaskar Trophy is also there in November.

The Indian batter joined Vishwanath, Michael Clarke, Mohammad Yousef, Graham Gooch, Sunil Gavaskar and Justin Langer, as players with over 1,000 Test runs at home in a calendar year.

1407 runs – Michael Clarke of Australia (2012)
1126 runs – Mohammad Yousuf of Pakistan (2006)
1058 runs – Graham Gooch of England (1990)

1056 runs – Yashasvi Jaiswal of India (2024)
1047 runs – Gundappa Vishwanath of India (1979)
1013 runs – Sunil Gavaskar of India (1979)
1012 runs – Justin Langer of Australia (2004)

Additionally, he also became the fastest Indian batter to score 1000 Test runs in India in terms of balls taken after he got to the feat in 1315 ball. Next in the queue is Virender Sehwag who achieved the landmark in 1436 balls while skipper Rohit Sharma achieved it in 1506 balls.
