‘No accolades for…’: says Dhankhar in veiled attack at Rahul Gandhi over US remarks

New Delhi: Launching an oblique attack on Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar pointed out that no accolades can be given to those who tarnish the image and reputation of India’s institutions domestically and abroad.

Addressing a conclave, he underlined the significance of portraying India’s positive image on the world stage, essentially when citizens travel abroad.

Dhankhar added that every Indian who goes outside the country is an ambassador of India. And he should have nothing in his heart except 100% commitment for the nation, nationalism, he said. He underlined that the current environment of India provides enough opportunity for persons to develop and succeed. However, he said some narratives overlook this development by highlighting negatives.

He also hit out at comments made in the US which suggested that only upper-class people are admitted to coveted institutions like IITs and IIMs. Rubbishing such claims, the VP pointed out that they are in a “fool’s paradise”, and added that the privileged class no more holds sway in India, and everyone is accountable to the rule of law.

This veiled attack on Rahul Gandhi came after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge shot off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and raised the issue of “extremely objectionable” statements by ruling alliance members targeting Rahul Gandhi. Kharge contended that legal action should be taken to check the “deterioration of Indian politics”.

During his address, Dhankhar also asked the media to be a “little bold”. “We have to address issues not with individuals on the radar. How can we have individual-centric approach.” Dhankhar pointed out that democracy thrives when the media stays aligned with the nation’s development.

Earlier, Dhankhar had said Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on the 50% limit on quota for SCs, STs, and OBCs reflected an “anti-constitutional mindset”.
