Zepto delivery boy assaults customer in Bengaluru after address error: CCTV footage

Bengaluru: A concerning incident in Bengaluru highlights the potential risks associated with the rapid growth of online delivery services. On 21 May, Shashank, a resident of Basaveshwaranagara, ordered goods through the quick-delivery service Zepto. However, due to an error in the provided delivery address, the Zepto delivery driver, identified as Vishnuvardhan, arrived at the incorrect location.

This seemingly minor mistake escalated into a violent confrontation. According to Shashank’s account to the media, Vishnuvardhan reacted aggressively, engaging in a verbal argument that quickly turned physical. The driver reportedly assaulted Shashank, inflicting a severe eye injury that may require surgery. Shashank’s family also reported verbal abuse directed towards female family members present.

Following the assault, Shashank immediately contacted the police and filed an FIR. The incident report details the assault committed by Vishnuvardhan and the injuries sustained by Shashank. The police are currently investigating the matter. Zepto, the company involved, has reportedly terminated Vishnuvardhan’s employment. However, Shashank expressed concerns about the lack of immediate action and the potential for future incidents given the driver’s knowledge of his home address.

The incident underscores the need for improved safety protocols within the online delivery sector. While the convenience of rapid delivery is undeniable, the safety and well-being of both customers and delivery personnel must remain a paramount concern. The case raises questions about the training and vetting processes employed by delivery companies, as well as the need for effective mechanisms to address customer complaints and ensure accountability.
