New Delhi: The Regional Meteorological Centre in West Bengal has issued a weather warning for multiple days pertaining to both North and South Bengal. The warning has been issued due to an east-west trough running from Punjab to the north of Bangladesh across south Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, north Gangetic West Bengal, and south Bihar.
The system is located 1.5 km above the mean sea level. Along with favourable wind patterns and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, the east-west trough may result in an enhanced thunderstorm, heavy rainfall and gusty winds in several districts in West Bengal. In the last few days, Over several places in Bengal like Howrah, Burdwan, North and South 24 Parganas, Purulia and Malda districts have experienced gusty winds with maximum speeds ranging between 30 to 48 kmph. Notably, the North Dinajpur district has witnessed heavy rainfall.

South Bengal is likely to experienced thunderstorms with gusty winds, lightning and light to moderate rain. These can happen in Jhargram, Purulia, West Midnapore, Bankura, Nadia, West Burdwan and Murshidabad. The weather can be more intense in North Bengal and there can be thunderstorms, lightning and light to moderate rainfall in Malda, North and South Dinajpur districts. There can be heavy rainfall in North Dinajpur while places like Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri may experience thunderstorms, lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall. There can be heavy rainfall in some places Alipurduar, Kalimpong, and in Coochbehar.

There is likely to be thunderstorms with gusty winds in South Bengal which can also experience lightning accompanied by light to moderate rainfall in some places in districts like Purulia, Bankura, East and West Burdwan, West Midnapore, Murshidabad, and Birbhum. The North Bengal is likely to experience thunderstorms with gusty winds, lightning, accompanied by light to moderate rain. In some places in North Dinajpur and Coochbehar, there is likely to be heavy rainfall.
What is the forecast for May 22?
In several districts in North and South Bengal, there can be gusty winds, lightning along with light to moderate rainfall. There may be heavy rainfall in Coochbehar district, and authorities have warned of possible damages to standing crops. There is an increased chance of lightning strikes in open fields and special attention is being given to loose and unsecured structures which can suffer damage because of the weather. There can be traffic disruptions in the urban areas and the danger of landslides is looming over the hilly regions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. During thunderstorms, residents have been advised to take shelter in safe places and avoid standing under trees or electric poles and not to get in touch with water bodies.
