Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and other regions in Maharashtra, warning of thunderstorms with lightning, moderate rainfall, and gusty winds between May 17 and May 21, 2025.
As per the latest IMD bulletin, Mumbai will be under yellow alert on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Meanwhile, Thane and Raigad districts will remain under the weather warning from Sunday through Wednesday. Given the alert, several parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Thane, are expected to receive moderate rain today.
Speaking to ANI, IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava said southern states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka are likely to witness consistent rainfall, along with thunderstorms and strong winds, over the next five days. Central India is also forecast to experience similar weather conditions. On Saturday, pre-monsoon showers lashed various parts of Mumbai, which has been experiencing intermittent rainfall over the past few days.
Early monsoon likely in Kerala
According to IMD’s earlier announcement, the southwest monsoon is set to reach Kerala within the next four to five days—earlier than the usual onset date of June 1. If it arrives by May 27 as predicted, this would mark the earliest onset over the Indian mainland since 2009, when the monsoon hit on May 23.
For the 2025 season (June to September), IMD forecasts above-normal rainfall, expecting precipitation to exceed 104% of the Long Period Average (LPA) across the country.
The onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala is considered a key milestone in India’s weather calendar, signaling the shift from the hot, dry season to the much-awaited rainy season.
The current yellow alert indicates the potential for unstable weather conditions across Maharashtra, with rain and thunderstorms expected to continue through the coming days.
