New Delhi: The weather department has warned of heavy rains in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad and coastal areas of Konkan in the next 24 hours. A yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai and an orange alert for Raigad district. There is an alert of high tide of 4.94 meters in the sea on May 28 at 1:09 AM. This means that waves up to 14 to 15 feet high will rise in the sea.

The weather department has also issued a warning of heavy rains and strong winds in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, Satara district, Kolhapur district, Solapur district, Jeur and Sangli districts. Rainfall has also been predicted in Marathwada and Vidarbha.

On May 27, it rained heavily on the Western Ghats. Several districts in Maharashtra have received heavy rainfall as a result. Meanwhile, relentless rain wrecked havoc in several Maharashtra districts, as Mumbai recorded the earliest onset of monsoon in 75 years on May 26. Rain-related incidents have claimed the lives of at least six people in two states, Maharashtra and Karnataka, and many are believed to be missing. Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Goa are also witnessing disruptions due to heavy monsoon rains.

The early monsoon onset coincided with Mumbai breaking a century-old record for May rainfall, which has now reached 295 mm. The IMD’s Colaba observatory shattered the all-time May rainfall record by registering 439 mm so far, exceeding the previous mark of 279.4 mm set in May 1918. Southern parts of the city were the worst affected, with many places getting submerged in the torrential showers. Bus and local train services were also affected due to the rains.

Rain continues to lash eight districts of Marathwada in Maharashtra. Rain is intermittently occurring in entire Marathwada including Nanded, Jalna, Beed, Latur but with strong winds and lightning.

Three people swept away

Due to torrential rains on Monday in Hadgaon tehsil of Maharashtra’s Nanded district, a small river in Varvat village suddenly flooded. Three women of the same family, mother, daughter and niece, were swept away in this flood. The body of one has been recovered while search for the other two is going on.

It is being told that all of them were returning home from the farm when this accident happened. The body of 10-year-old Durga Balwant Shakirge has been recovered, while the search for her mother Aruna Balwant Shakirge (age 37) and seven-year-old Sameeksha Vijay Shakirge is still on. Hadgaon Tehsildar Surekha Nande is personally present at the spot and three teams have been deployed for relief and rescue work. The search operation is continuing at a fast pace.
