New Delhi: West Bengal is staring at the imminent arrival of monsoon, with many districts in South Bengal including Kolkata likely to witness significant rainfall this week, as per the India Meteorological Department. It has stated that unsettled weather will persist over the next 48 hours from Monday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon.
The IMD has predicted that there will be thunderstorms with intermittent heavy rain and people should prepare to see cloudy skies round the clock. The temperature will remain constant as it has been for the last few days, with highs around 31-32 degrees Celsius and lows near 27 degrees Celsius. There will be high humidity and muggy conditions.
Also, the IMD has issued an alert for West Bengal as it anticipates unstable weather in the coming days. It has issued yellow alert and advisory for several districts, including Kolkata, Hooghly, Howrah, and Purba Bardhaman. People in these regions have been urged to stay vigilant and follow safety precautions.
In Kolkata, the sky will remain cloudy and there will be light to moderate rain or thundershowers. South Bengal is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall occasionally accompanied by lightning and gusty wind. There may be isolated episodes of heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 28 and 29 in districts like North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, and Hooghly. In early June, North and South Bengal is likely to receive frequent showers between May 30 and June 5.
According to the estimations of the weather department, Kolkata could get the first pre-monsoon showers of the season by mid-week next. The IMD has informed that a low-pressure area will possibly form over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around Tuesday next week and become well-marked in the next two days. In a special bulletin, it said, “Light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is likely to commence on May 28 over coastal areas of West Bengal.” The weather department has warned of a few districts of heavy rainfall.
