New Delhi: In a major step to support India’s growing digital and creative industries, the government has launched the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT). The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, at the Waves Summit 2025.
IICT will focus on Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR). It is being set up with support from big global companies like NVIDIA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Star India, and Adobe. The institute aims to become a top centre for creative education and innovation, much like IITs and IIMs.
The first phase of the institute is already operational at the NFDC Building in Peddar Road, Mumbai. It includes advanced facilities such as gaming labs, animation studios, virtual production setups, edit and sound rooms, and smart classrooms. The second phase will involve setting up a 10-acre campus at Film City in Goregaon.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allocated Rs 400 crore for the project, and the Maharashtra government has provided land. The institute will be run in partnership with FICCI and CII.
In the future, regional centres of IICT will be opened across the country to give more people access to training and opportunities in the creative field. The institute will focus on training, innovation, research, and helping young creators and startups.
