Dehradun: The Meteorological Center has issued a yellow alert for rain in five hilly districts of Uttarakhand, predicting light to moderate showers that will provide much-needed relief from the summer heat.
However, dry weather in the plains is expected to cause a further rise in temperature, intensifying the discomfort in areas like Haridwar, Roorkee, and Udham Singh Nagar.
Weather shift in the hills
According to forecasts, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh may experience light rain with strong winds reaching 30 to 40 km/h in some regions. While the rain will bring down temperatures in these mountainous areas, the plains will likely record an increase of 1 to 3 degrees Celsius, making conditions warmer than usual.
Uttarakhand likely see monsoon showers between June 15 and June 20
The arrival of the monsoon is expected to bring widespread relief. The Meteorological Center has projected the onset of monsoon in Kerala by May 27, following which Uttarakhand will likely see monsoon showers between June 15 and June 20.
Heavy rains in Chamoli, cloudy skies in Kedarnath
On Monday, while the plains remained dry, the hilly district of Chamoli witnessed heavy rainfall, particularly in Pipalkoti and Gopeshwar, causing local disruptions. Uttarkashi and Kedarnath experienced overcast skies, signaling the changing weather patterns.
In Dehradun, afternoon cloud cover briefly lowered temperatures, but later, the bright sunshine intensified the heat, making conditions uncomfortable. Haridwar, Roorkee, and Udham Singh Nagar recorded temperatures 3 degrees above normal, highlighting the rising trend in the plains. On Monday, Dehradun registered a maximum temperature of 37°C, with a minimum of 24.5°C.
Precautions and advisory
Authorities have advised residents, especially in hilly areas, to stay vigilant amid possible thunderstorms and strong winds. Travelers to mountain regions are urged to check weather updates before heading out. Meanwhile, people in the plains should prepare for hot and dry conditions, staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged sun exposure.
With monsoon rains expected to hit Uttarakhand in the coming month, relief from scorching heat is anticipated, bringing a welcome shift to the region’s weather dynamics.
