Uttarakhand weather update: Monsoon rains trigger yellow alert in Dehradun, Nainital; landslides disrupt life in hills

Dehradun: The monsoon continues to batter Uttarakhand, bringing widespread rainfall from the mountains to the plains. On Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in four districts—Dehradun, Tehri, Nainital, and Bageshwar—warning of potential disruptions due to intense showers and thunderstorms.

While the plains are expected to see a slight decline in rainfall intensity, the mountainous regions remain vulnerable. Intermittent rains have led to a significant drop in temperatures, but also triggered landslides, road blockages, and overflowing rivers, leaving residents anxious and authorities on high alert.

Heavy rains on Tuesday wreaked havoc in several villages

In Chamoli district, heavy rains on Tuesday wreaked havoc in several villages. The Nanda Nagar–Nandprayag road was blocked due to a landslide, endangering the life of a pregnant woman who required urgent medical attention. In another incident, the Moksha Gad stream overflowed, causing severe destruction. A cowshed was completely washed away, and 11 residential buildings are now under threat. Crops in the area have also suffered extensive damage.

154 roads across the state were closed due to landslides and debris

According to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), 154 roads across the state were closed due to landslides and debris. While 30 of these have been cleared, restoration work is ongoing in the remaining areas. The Public Works Department and local administration are working round the clock to reopen key routes and ensure the safety of commuters.

Dehradun experienced a brief respite on Tuesday

Despite the chaos in the hills, Dehradun experienced a brief respite on Tuesday with sunny spells. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 33.6°C and a minimum of 22.6°C. However, the IMD has maintained a yellow alert for the capital, anticipating renewed rainfall activity.

State government has advised district administrations to stay prepared for emergency response

Moderate rainfall is also expected in parts of Pauri, Rudraprayag, Almora, Champawat, Pithoragarh, Haridwar, and Udham Singh Nagar. Authorities have urged residents, especially those in vulnerable areas, to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel. With rivers and streams running above normal levels and the terrain prone to landslides, the state government has advised district administrations to stay prepared for emergency response. Relief teams have been stationed in sensitive zones, and helplines are active for public assistance.
