Uttarakhand weather update: Monsoon set to arrive within 3 days; IMD issues heavy rain alert for Nainital, Bageshwar

Dehradun: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the monsoon may reach Uttarakhand within the next two to three days, bringing widespread rainfall across the state. A heavy rain warning has been issued for Nainital and Bageshwar, while light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are likely at most places in the Kumaon region and many parts of the Garhwal region.

Clouds have been hovering over the state for several days, and intermittent showers have brought much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat. In Dehradun, two to three rounds of rain were recorded from afternoon to evening on Wednesday, keeping temperatures below normal. The city is expected to remain partly cloudy today, with chances of light showers continuing.

According to the IMD, conditions are favorable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon into North India, including Uttarakhand. The department has warned of strong winds (40–50 km/h) and thunderstorms in some areas, especially in the hilly districts. The Char Dham region may also experience one or two rounds of light rain, which could affect pilgrim movement.

The temperature readings across key cities reflect the cooling effect of the ongoing pre-monsoon activity:

Dehradun: Max 32.5°C, Min 24.6°C

Udham Singh Nagar: Max 34.6°C, Min 25.0°C

Mukteshwar: Max 22.7°C, Min 13.8°C

New Tehri: Max 25.8°C, Min 17.5°C

While the rainfall has brought respite from heat, humidity levels remain high in the plains, making conditions slightly uncomfortable. The IMD has advised residents and travelers to stay updated on weather alerts, especially those planning to visit the hills or undertake the Char Dham Yatra.

Heavy showers in Nainital and Bageshwar

In the Kumaon region, most districts are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall, with localized heavy showers in Nainital and Bageshwar. In the Garhwal region, many areas will also see rain, though the intensity may vary. Authorities have been asked to remain on alert for landslides, waterlogging, and road blockages, particularly in vulnerable zones. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local administrations are monitoring the situation closely.

As Uttarakhand braces for the full onset of the monsoon, the coming days will be crucial in determining the intensity and impact of the seasonal rains. For now, the skies remain grey, the air cool, and the hills quietly await the monsoon’s full embrace.
