Among the most shocking cases was the murder of a 25-year-old local man in Pauri Garhwal, allegedly committed by a poclain machine operator who remains absconding. Meanwhile, in Dehradun, police arrested three men from Haryana and Delhi for attacking a merchant navy officer’s car after a road rage incident on May 30. Public outcry and demands for action

Residents of Dehradun and surrounding areas have expressed deep frustration over the rising violence. Many blame inadequate background checks for allowing criminal elements to operate freely. “What is happening in the past few days is completely unacceptable. We welcome tourists, but criminal activities against locals cannot be tolerated. There needs to be a strict crackdown on such behavior,” said a resident of Dehradun.

Police launch ‘Operation Lagaam’ to curb violence

In response to the growing concerns, Inspector General of Garhwal Range Rajeev Swaroop announced the launch of Operation Lagaam (Control)—a campaign aimed at curbing road rage and violent incidents. “The state is known as Devbhoomi—abode of gods—and we will not allow anyone to disturb its peaceful environment,” Swaroop stated. He confirmed that all district police units have been instructed to intensify verification drives and take firm action against offenders.

Dehradun police has issued 587 challans and collected Rs 1.67 lakh in fines within a week

Under Operation Lagaam, Dehradun police has taken strict action, issuing 587 challans and collecting Rs 1.67 lakh in fines within a week. The crackdown targets public drinking, illegal weapons, reckless driving, and stunt riding, with 67 individuals detained for violations. Authorities have intensified security measures due to a surge in tourist inflow, focusing on Raipur, Patel Nagar, Rajpur, and Mussoorie Road to curb unruly behavior. Hundreds of vehicles have been seized, and court challans issued to 163 offenders. The police continue tight surveillance to maintain order and ensure safe travel conditions across the region.

Security measures and future steps

Authorities are now focusing on enhanced security protocols, including background verification of workers, stricter surveillance, and rapid response teams to tackle emerging threats. With public pressure mounting, officials are expected to announce further measures to restore confidence and ensure safety across Uttarakhand. As investigations continue, residents hope that swift action will prevent further escalation of violence and preserve the state’s peaceful reputation.
