‘Women of Delhi betrayed’: Atishi questions Delhi CM over delay in Rs 2,500 aid

New Delhi: Former Delhi chief minister Atishi wrote to her successor Rekha Gupta on Saturday, questioning her why the BJP’s poll promise of Rs 2,500 to women in the national capital was not taken in the first cabinet meeting, saying the delay has left them feeling “betrayed”.

Atishi, the AAP MLA from Kalkaji, sought a meeting with the chief minister to discuss the Rs 2,500 monthly wid that was among the promises by Arvind Kejriwal too during the Delhi elections.

She questioned why the financial aid scheme for women was not approved in the new government’s first cabinet meeting, despite the prime minister’s promise during an election rally and also called on the chief minister to meet with the AAP delegation on Sunday to discuss their concerns and take decisive steps toward implementing the scheme.

Gupta and her council of ministers were sworn into office on Thursday after securing a victory over the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the recent assembly elections. AAP won 22 seats, including Atishi’s Kalkaji constituency, while the BJP comfortably crossed the majority mark in the 70-seat assembly with 48 seats.

Atishi, who served as chief minister in the previous AAP government, has requested a meeting with the current CM on February 23, accompanied by her party’s MLAs.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during an election rally in Dwarka on January 31, assured Delhi’s mothers and sisters that the scheme for Rs 2,500 monthly payments would be passed in the first cabinet meeting after the BJP formed the government,” she stated.

However, despite the BJP holding its first cabinet meeting on February 20, the scheme was not approved. She added that the women of Delhi, who trusted “Modi’s guarantee,” now feel “betrayed.”

BJP leaders, including CM Gupta, have reassured that the scheme will be implemented from March as promised.

Atishi, who secured victory in the Kalkaji assembly constituency by defeating the BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri in the Delhi elections, criticised the ruling party at a press conference yesterday for not fulfilling its electoral promises.

She said before the elections, both Prime Minister Modi and BJP national president JP Nadda had assured that the scheme would be approved in the first cabinet meeting and that every eligible woman would receive Rs 2,500 in her bank account by March 8.
