Lucknow: In a shocking incident reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Beruarbari, 4 women reportedly delivered babies in the light of mobile phone torches. The deliveries happened at a government primary healthcare centre in the state.
Enquiry ordered in matter
A 3-member panel has been formed to enquire into the matter. The investigation will be led by a deputy chief medical officer, reported Hindustan Times. Dr Sanjeev Barman, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the district was quoted by the newspaper as saying that they received information about 4 pregnant women undergoing deliveries under the light of mobile phone torches.
The deliveries reportedly took place on Monday night at the government health centre in Beruarbari. The health centre is located some 12 kilometres from the district headquarters.
Preliminary reports suggest that this happened due to a transformer having burnt at the Beruarbari Primary Health Centre. The transformer had burned 3 days prior to the day the deliveries happened under the torch light, said the CMO. The light could not be restored, despite there being a generator available at the health centre and diesel was also available, he added.
The Hindustan Times report, identified the woman who delivered the babies as Neetu Devi from Rajpur, Manju Devi from Achhoohi, Pinky Devi from Adar and Razia Khatoon from Apayal.
The CMO assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible, once the final enquiry report is submitted.
