‘Uski fitrat hai mukar jaane ki’: Tharoor’s poetic swipe after Pakistan violates ceasefire

New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor took a veiled swipe at Pakistan on Saturday, just hours after Islamabad violated a ceasefire it had itself announced with India. Using poetry to express his discontent, Tharoor shared a Hindi couplet on X: “Uski fitrat hai mukar jaane ki, uske vaade pe yakeen kaise karu (It’s their nature to go back on their word, how can I trust their promises?)”

Earlier, while reacting to the India-Pakistan ceasefire, Tharoor welcomed the decision but said India’s intention was never a prolonged conflict, only to respond to terrorism in the wake of the Pahalgam attack. “Peace is essential. I am very glad that India never wanted a long-term war. India wanted to teach terrorists a lesson, I believe that lesson has been taught. The other details are awaited,” ANI quoted him as saying.

India and Pakistan had announced on Saturday an agreement to immediately halt all military engagements on land, air, and sea. The decision came after four consecutive days of intense cross-border exchanges involving drones and missiles.

In a surprising turn, the first word of the ceasefire came from US President Donald Trump, who posted on Truth Social, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE.” He added, “Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

However, within hours of the announcement, fresh drone activity was reported in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, accompanied by explosions. Indian security forces promptly activated air defence systems in response.

This prompted a late-night press briefing by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who confirmed that Pakistan had violated the ceasefire agreement reached just hours earlier. Misri emphasized that the Indian armed forces had responded “adequately and appropriately.”

“For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier this evening between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan,” he stated. “This is a breach of the understanding arrived earlier today.”

He further urged Pakistan to handle the matter with sincerity: “The armed forces are giving an adequate and appropriate response to these violations and we take very very serious note of these violations.”
