CM Dhami stated that the draft has been received, and a cabinet meeting will soon be held to decide the date for implementing the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand.

Key points of UCC in the state

The Chief Minister has announced that the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in Uttarakhand by State Foundation Day. CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, fulfilling his assembly election promise, constituted a committee on 27 May 2022 under the chairmanship of Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai (Retd) to draft the Uniform Civil Code. The committee submitted its draft on 2 February 2024. Subsequently, the government convened a special Assembly session and passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill. President Draupadi Murmu approved it on March 11. In February this year, a committee chaired by former Chief Secretary Shatrughan Singh began working on the rules. The proposed rules include registering information about marriages, live-in relationships, and wills through a website and mobile app dedicated to the Uniform Civil Code.

UCC aims to replace personal laws based on religious practices with a common set of laws

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) aims to replace personal laws based on religious practices with a common set of laws governing every citizen. It will ensure uniform rules for marriage irrespective of religious affiliation. Additionally, it will eliminate discriminatory practices and gender biases. Moreover, equal property rights for sons and daughters, and elimination of distinctions between legitimate and illegitimate children are the key factors of the UCC. Apart from this this will provide equal property rights for adopted and biological children both.

State Foundation Day programs are set to begin from November 6

Uttarakhand will celebrate its 25th year of establishment on November 9, marking the start of its silver jubilee. This year’s foundation day celebrations will be grand. The festivities will kick off with the Pravasi Uttarakhand Sammelan in New Delhi on November 6, followed by the launch of the Devbhoomi Rajat Utsav program on November 9, which will continue throughout the year.
