New Delhi: As election results continue to roll in from across the United States, former President Donald Trump holds a steady lead over Vice President Kamala Harris. While Harris secured Democratic strongholds like California and New York, Trump claimed major victories in the pivotal states of Texas and Florida.
According to the latest AP projections, Republican candidate Trump has so far garnered 230 electoral votes, while Harris has secured 187. Although these results are largely in line with expectations, the outcome of the presidential race hinges on seven critical swing states.
Trump ahead in ‘blue wall’ states
North Carolina, a key swing state with 16 electoral votes, has gone to Trump. He also leads in traditionally Democratic “blue wall” states, including Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Even Georgia shows Trump with an advantage, and The New York Times currently gives him over a 90 percent chance of winning the election.
Though swing states remain too close to call, Harris has not gained ground in counties that Joe Biden won in 2020. A Democratic official affiliated with the Harris campaign expressed concern over the current results in a conversation with a local news outlet. Adding to Democratic challenges, Republicans won control of the Senate, and early results indicate a potential Republican trend in the House of Representatives.
Republicans win Senate
Republicans solidified Senate control on Tuesday with critical wins in West Virginia and Ohio, ensuring Donald Trump’s party will lead at least one chamber of Congress next year. In West Virginia, Republican Jim Justice was projected to win an open Senate seat previously held by Joe Manchin, who recently changed his affiliation to independent. Additionally, multiple media outlets projected that in Ohio, Republican Bernie Moreno defeated incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown. These victories give Republicans a 51-49 majority in the Senate, with potential for further gains as additional competitive races are decided.
