Top Hizb commander Farooq Nali killed in Kulgam encounter; who is he?

Jammu: In a major breakthrough, top Hizb commander Farooq Nali was killed along with four other terrorists in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Thursday. A senior police official said that Farooq Nali, a most-wanted and one of the longest-surviving terrorists in the valley, was killed during a gunfight with police and security forces.

Farooq Nali was involved in numerous terror-related activities, including attacks on civilians and security forces. “His death is a significant achievement for the police and security forces,” the officer said.

The encounter took place on the same day Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. According to sources, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, senior officials from the Army, paramilitary forces, Jammu & Kashmir administration, intelligence agencies and Home Ministry are likely to attend the meeting. The Home Minister will receive a briefing on the current situation, including the condition of border areas.

Previous terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir have witnessed several terrorist incidents this year. On October 20, a terrorist attack in central Kashmir claimed seven lives. Prior to this, there were targeted attacks on outsiders working in the Valley.

In 2019, 142 terrorists were killed in Jammu and Kashmir, while this year, the number has dropped to about 45. Similarly, civilian casualties have significantly reduced from 50 in 2019 to 14 as of the first week of November this year.
