New Delhi: The picture of the smiling faces of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff and the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force tells a compelling story. A story of crushing Pakistan and projecting calm confidence after a tense night marked by a serious national security threat. The picture was taken when India’s top defence leadership gathered in New Delhi for a high-level review, less than 24 hours after a major aerial offensive by Pakistan. It followed Operation Sindoor, India’s swift and precise counter to Pakistan’s drone and missile attacks along the western front.
The meeting, held on Friday (May 9), was attended by Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, and Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi.
India foils attack by Pakistan
On the night of May 8–9, Pakistan attempted a coordinated aerial assault targeting Indian military infrastructure across Jammu, Pathankot, Udhampur, Akhnoor, Nagrota, and other key locations. The attack included over 50 drones and loitering munitions aimed at destabilising India’s defence preparedness.
India’s multi-layered air defence system sprang into action. Advanced surveillance radars, interceptor missiles, and systems like the Russian-made S-400 ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ neutralised the threat, protecting 15 key defence sites over a stretch of 1,800-kilometre airspace. The military used counter-UAS platforms such as L-70 guns, Zu-23mm, Schilka systems, and Israeli-origin HAROP drones for retaliatory precision strikes.
Sirens and explosions were reported across border districts, including Baramulla, Kupwara, and Samba, but thanks to the preparedness of Indian forces, no damage to defence infrastructure was reported. Army units, supported by air defence commands, maintained an aggressive vigil through the night.
Smiling through a symbolic show of control
The two-hour meeting at South Block wasn’t just a military debriefing. It was also a symbolic show of control. During the review, Army Chief General Dwivedi provided a situation update, while Air Chief Marshal Singh outlined the air force’s response in detail. The focus remained on reinforcing border readiness, assessing escalation scenarios, and calibrating future responses.
Optics of the moment
The optics of the moment—smiling faces after a long night of defence operations—were not lost. The photograph has come to represent India’s military posture: assertive, composed, and in full control. Netizens have interpreted the calm demeanour as a clear message to both citizens and adversaries: India is secure, its leadership is alert, and it will not be rattled by provocation.
Operation Sindoor was not just a defence; it was a declaration that every hostile act would be met with swift and overwhelming precision. As Pakistan reels from its failed attack and the destruction of terror launchpads across the LoC, India’s strategy is being read not in words, but in action.
