Stone pelting over Ganesha pandal in Surat, police lathicharge to disperse protesters

Surat: The police has to lathicharge and use tear gas to disperse protesters who were demanding action against those involved in an stone pelting incident at a Ganesha pandal in Saiyadpura area of the city on Sunday evening.

City police chief Anupam Singh Gehlot said that about 1000 police personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain peace, and law and order in the area after yesterday’s incident.

“Some children pelted stones at a Ganesh pandal after which a clash broke out. The police immediately took away those children from there…Police were immediately deployed in the area. Lathi charge was done in all the areas where it was needed and tear gas was used…All the accused who were involved in the peace disturbance are being arrested,” said Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot.

State Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi informed that apart from six accused persons for the stone pelting incident, about 27 others have been also apprehended for encouraging the main accused to carry out the crime. Sanghvi further added that an investigation underway to find out if the incident was part of any bigger conspiracy to disturb peace and harmony in the area. He also warned people against indulging in any incidents that might affect peace.
