Kolkata: A Sealdah court will pronounce its verdict tomorrow (January 18) in the rape and murder of a woman doctor, who was on-duty, at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The hearing in the trial of the case was concluded on January 9. The in-camera trial in the rape and murder case of the on-duty woman doctor commenced before the trial court on November 12 last year.

The additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court had, after the trial was concluded, said that the verdict in the case will be delivered on January 18.

CBI has sought death sentence for prime accused Roy

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the investigation of the woman doctor’s rape and murder case from the Kolkata Police on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, has prayed from the Sealdah trial court to award death sentence to prime accused Sanjay Roy.

CBI has relied on various oral and documentary evidence to establish Roy was sole perpetrator

The CBI, in its chargesheet filed before the trial court, has relied on various oral and documentary evidence as well as forensic and scientific reports to establish that Roy was the sole perpetrator of the heinous crime committed on the on-duty woman doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s seminar room on August 9 last year.

Deceased woman doctor’s body was found with severe injuries

The 31-year-old woman doctor was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year when she had gone there to sleep in the seminar room during a break in the night. The woman doctor’s body was later found with severe injuries in the seminar room.

Sealdah trial court framed charges against Roy on November 4 last year

Roy was working as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police and was arrested the next day on August 10 for his alleged involvement in crime, and the trial court framed charges against him. The Kolkata Police filed chargesheet before the trial court against Roy, who was booked in the rape and murder case under various sections of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for the alleged crime, and the trial court framed charges against him in the case on November 4 last year.

Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of matter

The Supreme Court took a suo motu cognisance of the matter, which sparked nationwide outrage and prolonged protests, and has been monitoring the investigation of the case.
