RG Kar case: Thousands join candle march to demand justice for Kolkata rape and murder victim

Kolkata: Days after a 31-year-old resident doctor was allegedly raped and murdered inside RG Kar hospital, people from all walks of life gathered across Kolkata to demand justice for the victim. They also organized candlelight marches across several parts of the city.

People assembled in several parts of the city including Shyambazar, New Town’s Biswa Bangla Gate, Sodpur Traffic More, Sinthir More, Jadavpur 8B bus stand, Hazra More, Behala Sakher Bazar, and Lake Gardens. Participants also organised plays on the streets to protest against the heinous crime committed against the victim.

Candle light march across Kolkata

The atmosphere was similar to the ‘Reclaim the Night’ movement of August 14 at midnight. Apart from the candlelight march across the city, people also switched to lights to mark their protest against the incident. Lights at West Bengal Raj Bhawan were also switched off as a symbol of protest against the crime. Several noted personalities, including Bengali film personalities Swastika Mukherjee and Sohini Sarkaralso also joined the protesters in condemning the incident.

Apart from Kolkata protests were also seen in several parts of the country. In Birbhum district of the state too, people joined in large numbers and took out march.  In Delhi, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital resident doctors carried out candlelight protests and demanded quicker justice for the victim.

Lawyers form a human chain

Earlier in the day, several lawyers in Kolkata formed human chains outside the Calcutta High Court and Bankshall Court on Wednesday. They also raised placards and shouted slogans outside the court buildings. After forming a human chain, the lawyers also participated in a rally.

Since the body of the doctor was found inside the hospital in August, there have a massive anger and protests across the country, with people demanding justice for the victim. Even as a civic volunteer has been arrested in the case, the case has been handed over to the CBI, for further probe in the matter.
