Rajasthan school roof collapse: Seven dead, political fallout ensues

The collapse of a school roof in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, on Friday morning resulted in the tragic deaths of seven students and injuries to numerous others. This incident has ignited a fierce political debate, with accusations of negligence levelled against the current state government. The opposition has seized upon the tragedy, using it to criticise the BJP’s handling of school infrastructure.

Former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot described the incident as “criminal negligence,” highlighting what he claims is a two-year pattern of government inaction. He demanded a comprehensive investigation and immediate action against those responsible. His statement was met with a counter-argument from the state’s Education Minister, who placed blame squarely on the previous Congress regime. This exchange of accusations underscores the deeply polarised political climate surrounding the event.

Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Indian National Congress and Member of Parliament, also weighed in, expressing profound concern and demanding a transparent investigation leading to the strictest possible punishment for any individuals found to be at fault. His intervention further underscores the significance of the tragedy as a political flashpoint.

Beyond the political rhetoric, the immediate consequences for the affected families are profound. The state government has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to each family that lost a child. In addition to the financial support, authorities have pledged to construct a new school to replace the damaged building. The new school will bear the names of the deceased children, a testament to the loss suffered by the community. Five teachers have been suspended pending the outcome of an official inquiry into the causes of the collapse.
