Rajasthan: 8 drown while bathing in Banas river in Tonk district

New Delhi: Eight men drowned and three others were injured in the Banas River in Rajasthan’s Tonk district. The incident occurred when a group of 11 men, aged 25 to 30, slipped into deep water while bathing during a picnic. The three injured men were rescued and rushed to a hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition. However, doctors declared the other eight men dead on arrival.

Tonk Superintendent of Police, Vikas Sangwan, said, “A group of 11 men from Jaipur had entered the river to bathe when they slipped into deep water.” He added that the cause of the accident remains unclear but confirmed that the three survivors sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment.

Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed his deep condolences for the lives lost. In a post on X, he wrote, “The news of the deaths due to drowning in the Banas river located in Tonk district is extremely sad and painful. As soon as the information about the incident was received, the district administration officials were instructed to conduct rescue and relief operations immediately.”

This heartbreaking accident brings back a similar tragedy that occurred a month back in Jaipur, where four children, three of whom were girls, drowned in a pond. The incident took place in the village of Kakadiyan ki Dhani near the Dudu area. A group of goat herders had stopped near a pond, and while bathing, Kamlesh Devi (18), slipped into the pond.

As she was drowning, three others jumped to save her, Vinod Kumar, Rameshwari and Hema Bawariya, all of whom drowned tragically.

Locals and families were notified and all the four bodies were recovered after a three-hour search and rescued effort. Police said that all of them belonged from the same village.
