Qualified in UGC NET; here are academic and professional opportunities

New Delhi: One of the prestigious exams, the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET), is conducted by the National Test Agency (NTA) to consider the eligibility for the post of assistant professor and junior research fellowship programs in 83 subjects across India. The exam is mainly conducted primarily for individuals aspiring to pursue careers in academia and research. Candidates holding a master’s degree with 55 per cent (50 per cent for the reserved category) marks are eligible for the exam. Individuals appearing for the final exam can also apply to appear in the UGC-NET exam.

UGC-NET happens twice a year in the months of June and December. Several opportunities in the fields of academia, research, and some non-academic open up once the UGC-NET is cleared.

The details of job opportunities secured after passing the UGC-NET exam:

1. Assistant Professor: The majority of candidates who appear for the UGC-NET examination do so with the aspiration of becoming educators in higher education institutions across India. This exam is a well-recognized gateway to securing positions in various colleges and universities nationwide. Beyond teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, those appointed as assistant professors also contribute to curriculum design, conduct examinations, and participate in the academic development of the institution. The role of an assistant professor extends beyond the classroom, involving responsibilities that shape the educational standards and experiences for students. With experience, they rise up the ladder to become the dean of the institutions.

2. Junior Research Fellowship (JRF): UGC-NET gives an opportunity to carry on further studies and research in various fields. During the fellowship, a lucrative stipend is paid by the government. Eligible candidates need to qualify for NET-JRF or the UGC-CSIR joint test. Apart from research, this program enables students to work on government or private institutions-aided projects that lead to major contributions in government policy papers, conferences, and scholarly publications. It opens a vast opportunity to build a career in research institutions, think tanks, etc.

3. Hiring in Public Service Undertakings (PSUs) and Government Organizations: Various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and government organizations recruit candidates who have qualified for the UGC-NET exam, offering them opportunities to build a successful career. Roles in human resource management, corporate social responsibility, and other research-oriented posts are reserved for such individuals. Organizations like ONGC, NTPC, Indian Oil, etc. have hired many based on the UGC-NET scores. Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), and Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR) have a record of frequent hiring.

4. PhD Programs: Qualified candidates can delve into the world of postdoctoral programs in reputed institutions across India once they excelled in UGC-NET. Earning a prestigious degree like a PhD gives the opportunity to make substantial contributions in specific fields and research in that field for the advancement of the subject. PhD holders can join institutions to teach or can also make a career in various organizations.

5. Content Development: With expertise in a specific subject area, UGC NET-qualified individuals can enter the field of content development. Individuals can work with publishing houses, educational companies, or online platforms to create textbooks, study materials, or test preparation content. Candidates can also choose careers as freelance writers, bloggers, or public speakers in specific subject matter. Options to write for academic journals, newspapers, magazines, or even start their own blogs on topics related to education, research, and societal issues are also open. Speaking engagements at seminars, workshops, or conferences also provide opportunities for NET-qualified individuals to share their knowledge.

Door to education, research, and some of the public sector fields is made accessible through the UGC-NET exam. Considered as a metric for academic excellence, the UGC-NET exam has the potential for professional growth and financial stability.
