‘Priceless gem of India’: Dharmendra Pradhan’s emotional tribute to former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan paid an emotional tribute to former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan, describing him as a “priceless gem” of the nation and a “guiding light” for the fields of science, education and public policy. He said that implementing the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which Kasturirangan had crafted, would be the biggest tribute to his visionary leadership.

“I am deeply heartbroken by his passing. His loss is not only profound for the scientific and academic community but is also an intensely personal one for me,” Pradhan said. Remembering him warmly, Pradhan wrote that Dr Kasturirangan was much more than a mentor — he was a source of wisdom, compassion, and quiet strength.

K Kasturirangan passed away on Friday morning at his residence in Bengaluru. He had been a towering figure in India’s development, leading the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for over nine years. Under his leadership, India’s space program made great strides in satellite launches and research. After his contribution to India’s space achievements, he took on the important responsibility of drafting and leading India’s New Education Policy, a major reform aimed at changing the future of the Indian education system.

Pradhan said that Dr Kasturirangan was not just a scientist or a policymaker, but a true nation-builder whose work would benefit generations to come. He highlighted that Dr. Kasturirangan’s far-sightedness could be seen clearly in the vision of NEP 2020, a policy which will continue to shape India’s future.

In his lifetime, Kasturirangan served in several important roles. He was the Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the Chairman of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission, a nominated Member of the Rajya Sabha, and a Member of the erstwhile Planning Commission of India. He also served as the Director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Bengaluru between 2004 and 2009.

Pradhan said that India’s scientific and educational achievements owe a lot to Dr. Kasturirangan’s leadership. He added that Dr. Kasturirangan’s legacy will live on through the young minds and scientists he has inspired. “India will always remain indebted to his towering intellect, his calm leadership, and his selfless service to the nation,” Pradhan said, offering condolences to Dr. Kasturirangan’s family, colleagues, and admirers.

K Kasturirangan was a recipient of many national honors, including the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award, for his extraordinary service to India.
