Post Operation Sindoor, govt likely to raise defence budget by Rs 50,000 crore

New Delhi: Indian government is planning to increase the defence budget by Rs 50,000 crore following the success of Operation Sindoor, according to sources. The proposal is likely to be presented as a supplementary budget during the Winter Session of Parliament. This extra money will be used to buy weapons, ammunition, and invest in new defence technology.

This year, a record Rs 6.81 lakh crore was allocated for defence in the Union Budget, which is a 9.53% increase from the last financial year. In 2014-15, the defence budget was Rs 2.29 lakh crore. Over the past 10 years, the defence budget has nearly tripled under the NDA government.

The proposed funds are expected to support the urgent needs of the armed forces, including key equipment and research and development.

The additional push comes after Operation Sindoor, where India targeted nine terror camps inside Pakistan without crossing the border. This operation highlighted India’s strong defence systems and the effectiveness of its home-grown technology.

During the operation, India’s air defence systems performed impressively, stopping nearly all incoming drones and missiles. Systems like the Russian-made S-400 Triumf, Israeli Barak-8, and India’s own Akash missile system were used. Older systems like Pechora and OSA-AK also played a role in protecting the country.

After the success of the mission, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the performance of Indian-made weapons. In his speech on May 12, he said, “The credibility of our Made-in-India weapons has been firmly established. The world now sees their power in modern warfare.”
