Piyush Goyal: India will not compromise on national interest in US trade deal

India’s stance on the ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade deal with the United States has hardened. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently delivered a firm message, rejecting any suggestion that India would compromise its national interests for the sake of a swift agreement. His remarks directly address previous reports alleging pressure tactics employed by the former US President Donald Trump to expedite the deal.

Goyal’s statement leaves no room for misinterpretation. He explicitly stated that the deal will only be finalised when it completely aligns with India’s national priorities. This unwavering position underscores India’s commitment to ensuring that any trade agreement benefits the nation equally, and not at the cost of compromising its sovereignty or long-term economic objectives.

The minister’s assertive declaration effectively dismisses speculation surrounding India’s willingness to negotiate under pressure. While the US has repeatedly indicated its desire for a comprehensive trade agreement with India, Goyal’s statement ensures that this will only be achieved on terms that fully serve India’s national interests.
