Operation Sindoor debate continues in Parliament: Amit Shah to speak in Lok Sabha today

New Delhi: The Monsoon Session of Parliament resumes today with the Lok Sabha continuing its discussion on Operation Sindoor, a military response launched after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. The debate, which began on Monday afternoon and lasted until 1 am Tuesday, saw sharp exchanges between members of the ruling NDA and the Opposition.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to address the House around noon. Government sources have hinted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may also speak in the evening to underline the Centre’s position on national security and its counterterrorism efforts. Sources also indicated that the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, may speak just before the Prime Minister.

Senior leaders from both the government and the Opposition are scheduled to participate, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, who are likely to challenge the Centre’s handling of the attack and its global messaging.

Monday’s debate was opened by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who described Operation Sindoor as a “strong, successful and decisive” response to the terror strike. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also weighed in, stating firmly that at no point during discussions with the United States was there any talk of trade linked to the Pahalgam attack. He cited condemnation from global groupings such as BRICS and the Quad.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Gaurav Gogoi, criticised the government sharply, questioning why, even after 100 days, five of the attackers remain unaccounted for.

While the Lok Sabha began its discussion on Monday, the Rajya Sabha will open its own debate today, expected to run for 16 hours.

Aside from the Operation Sindoor debate, the Lok Sabha will also see the tabling of reports from the Standing Committees on Communications and Information Technology. Other committees, including those on Consumer Affairs, Food, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, will present reports on government action taken on previous recommendations.
