New Delhi: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi and three other Congress MPs are likely to be in the in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for the One Nation, One Election initiative, sources said  Party leaders Manish Tewari, Randeep Surjewala and Sukhdev Bhagat are expected to in the committee.

Other political parties have also nominated their members for the JPC, including Sanjay Jha from JD(U), Dharmendra Yadav from Samajwadi Party and Harish Balayogi from TDP. From the DMK, P Wilson and Selva Gagapathy will join the JPC, while Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde and TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee and Saket Gokhale are also likely to participate. Ravi Shankar Prasad, PP Chaudhary, Nishikant Dubey from BJP can also be members of JPC.

Meanwhile, in a meeting between Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party raised objections to the proposed candidate for the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman.

Sources within Congress said that the party was not satisfied with the nominee and would submit a formal dissent note when the appointment is made. The meeting, which concluded earlier today, was part of ongoing consultations regarding various key issues. One Nation, One Election Bill

After a lively debate in the Lok Sabha, two Bills related to ‘One Nation, One Election’ were introduced. The legislation would not affect the powers of the states, said Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. After a nearly 90-minute debate, Meghwal introduced the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha. The government had constituted a committee headed by former President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.

Former President Ram Nath Kovind said that the implementation of the ‘One nation, one poll’ proposal by the Centre would not only streamline the election process but also contribute to the country’s economic growth. The government had set up a committee led by Kovind to examine the proposal
