New Delhi: January 12 marks the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, one of the most iconic spiritual leaders the world has ever known. This day, designated as National Youth Day since 1985, celebrates not just his life, but also the enduring inspiration he offers to the youth of this nation.

Swami Vivekananda’s belief in the power of youth as the most potent catalyst for change is both timeless and transformative. “A brave, frank, clean-hearted, courageous and aspiring youth is the only foundation on which the future nation can be built,” he declared.

His words were call to action — one that galvanised an entire generation to awaken to their potential and contribute to the Indian independence movement.

A call to awaken

Swami Vivekananda’s influence on India’s freedom struggle is undeniable. He injected patriotism into the veins of the young, igniting their spirits with his wake-up call to rise above personal ambitions for the greater good. “What we want are some young men who will renounce everything and sacrifice their lives for their country’s sake,” he famously said. This rallying cry inspired many youths to take up the mantle of service and sacrifice, laying the groundwork for a liberated India.

Swami Vivekananda’s message transcends the context of colonial India. Even today, his words resonate with those seeking purpose and meaning in their lives.

Vivekananda was acutely aware of the challenges the youth face — depression, fear, weakness, and jealousy. Yet, he offered a remedy rooted in courage and self-belief: “The greatest sin is to think yourself weak. The remedy of weakness is not brooding over weakness, but thinking of strength.”

The power within

In a world where distractions are endless, and self-doubt runs rampant, Swami Vivekananda’s teachings provide clarity. He emphasised on the immense power within every individual, urging young people to tap into their inner potential. “All power is within you. You can do anything and everything. Believe in that,” he said. His words are a reminder that success is not handed down, but achieved through persistence, resilience and self-confidence.

For Vivekananda, the essence of youth lies in action. He exhorted them, “Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached.” These words encapsulate his vision of relentless pursuit, undeterred by obstacles or criticism. “All great undertakings are achieved through mighty obstacles. Keep up the deepest mental poise. Take not even the slightest notice of what puerile creatures may be saying against you,” he advised.

Fusion of tradition and modernity

Swami Vivekananda’s vision was not limited to individual achievement. He called upon the youth to embrace modernity while staying rooted in India’s ancient values. In an era where globalisation often leads to cultural homogenisation, his message is a beacon for preserving identity amidst change.

One of his most profound contributions to society was his perspective on education. “Education is not information that is put into your brain and runs riot there. It is the manifestation of perfection already in man,” he said. For him, education was not about rote learning but about nurturing character, expanding intellect, and fostering self-reliance. “We must have life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas,” he emphasised.

Call for youth

Vivekananda’s call for youth to become heroes is as relevant today as it was during his time. He envisioned a generation that would stand firm in truth, courage, and conviction. “Our country requires heroes; be heroes. Stand firm like a rock. Truth always triumphs. What India wants is a new electric fire to stir up a fresh vigour in the national veins,” he urged.

In a rapidly changing world, fraught with galaxy of challenges — climate change, social inequality, and technological disruptions — Swami Vivekananda’s message of courage, self-belief, and relentless action is the need of the hour. His teachings inspire young minds to rise above mediocrity, embrace their unique potential and contribute meaningfully to society.

A legacy of hope

As India observes National Youth Day, it is not just an occasion to commemorate the life of Swami Vivekananda but also an opportunity to reflect on his teachings and apply them to our lives. His words, “Believe in yourself and the world will be at your feet,” are not just a motivational quote but a blueprint for living a purposeful and impactful life.

His legacy is a reminder that youth is not defined by age but by spirit to embracing challenges with vigor, standing tall in the face of adversity, and striving to build a better future.

In his own words, “Youth is the best time. The way in which you utilise this period will decide the nature of coming years that lie ahead of you.”

As we celebrate his birth anniversary, let the youth pledge to embody his ideals and become the heroes India needs.
