Nainital: In the last few years, Nainital and its surrounding areas have been witnessing rapid demographic shifts, raising concerns among local residents about economic displacement and illegal activities in the tourism sector.
The recent case involving Usman Ali, a contractor accused of a crime against a minor, has intensified discussions about unregulated business growth, demographic changes, and law enforcement measures in the region.
Concerns over unregulated business growth and demographic shifts have fueled local resentment
Beyond the immediate case, concerns over unregulated business growth and demographic shifts have fueled local resentment. Reports suggest that multiple contractors, including Usman Ali and several others, have expanded operations with alleged political and administrative support, leading to illegal construction projects across key areas of Nainital.
Economic shift & rising local discontent
Over 70% of tourism-related businesses, including taxi services, boat tourism, retail shops, and hospitality, are now reportedly controlled by new business entrants from outside districts like Rampur and Moradabad. Many local residents argue that this demographic shift has created economic imbalances, reducing job opportunities for native entrepreneurs. Concerns about illegal business practices, fraudulent registrations, and unauthorized constructions have grown, especially in Mallital Phad Bazaar (flee market) and other key tourism hubs. Despite legal actions such as temporary sealing of structures, critics believe that government intervention remains insufficient, allowing businesses to resume operations after minor penalties.
Political action & calls for regulation
Local leaders, including BJP city president Nitin Karki, have sought government intervention, urging stronger policies to protect indigenous businesses and regulate demographic shifts. In a letter to the Prime Minister, concerns over unrestricted migration, illegal business expansion, and tourism-related monopolization were raised. While the Chief Secretary was directed to review the issue, residents claim that no significant action has followed.
