Kargil: In a case which has left security forces in India baffled, a 43-year-old Indian woman who was on a vacation in Kargil, crossed over into Pakistan. The woman identified as Sunita, belongs to Nagpur. According to a report in the Times of India, Sunita crossed the LoC and walked into Pakistan on Wednesday.
Woman wanted to meet Pakistani pastor
Police said that Sunita was a former nurse in Kerala. She came to Jammu and Kashmir on a vacation and decided to cross the LoC from the last village in Kargil to meet a pastor in the neighbouring country. The woman claimed to have interacted with the pastor online and was desperate to meet him in person.
This was not the first time that the woman attempted to cross over into Pakistan. She had earlier been intercepted at the Attari border twice by security personnel, said reports. The incident comes at a time when security forces are on high alert, following the recent tensions with Pakistan and the easy crossover raises several questions on security along the international border.
Sunita is believed to have been taken into custody by the Pakistani forces. They are investigating how she managed to cross the border and what was her motive behind the act. Indian intelligence and security forces however have not confirmed the arrest of the woman by Pakistan. The TOI report quoted sources as saying that the woman was arrested after being spotted by some Pakistani villagers.
On May 14, Sunita accompanied by her young son reached Hundermaan, a border village in Kargil. She instructed her son to wait for her as she walked over and crossed the border. When the woman did not return for a long time, the villagers took her son to the Ladakh Police.
Her family has claimed that Sunita was not well and was undergoing treatment for some mental health issues. The police are probing her medical and call records. Her family has claimed that she was undergoing treatment at the Regional Mental Hospital in Nagpur.
