Pune: Maharashtra is set to experience a major transportation overhaul with the inauguration of the Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway. The expressway, which will connect Nagpur to Goa, is expected to significantly improve travel time, convenience, and regional development in the state.

The 802 km long expressway will feature a six-lane corridor and is being developed by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

Reduced travel time and boost to tourism

Currently, traveling between Nagpur and Goa takes about 18 to 20 hours. However, once the expressway is completed, this journey will be reduced to just 8 to 10 hours, cutting the travel time in half. This enhanced connectivity is expected to not only make travel more efficient but also provide a significant boost to Maharashtra’s tourism industry.

The expressway is a part of a larger initiative to improve infrastructure in the state and facilitate smoother transportation for both locals and tourists. With reduced travel time, tourism in Goa, as well as pilgrimage tourism in Maharashtra, is likely to see a significant increase.

Economic and social impact

The project is estimated to cost Rs 86,000 crore and will pass through 12 districts of Maharashtra, covering important regions like Wardha, Yavatmal, Hingoli, Nanded, Parbhani, and Sindhudurg. By linking these districts, the expressway is expected to boost regional development, opening new avenues for trade, commerce, and tourism in previously underdeveloped areas.

The route, starting from Pawanar in Wardha district and ending at Patradevi near the Maharashtra-Goa border, will pass through both urban and rural areas, improving connectivity between key locations and enhancing local economies.

Pilgrimage tourism

One of the key features of the Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway is its focus on religious tourism. The route will connect several important pilgrimage sites in Maharashtra, such as Tuljapur, Mahalaxmi (Kolhapur), and Patradevi. Pilgrims traveling to these spiritual destinations will find their journey easier and faster, thanks to the expressway’s direct and convenient path. This will likely attract more devotees and tourists to these religious sites, thereby promoting religious tourism in the region.

Development of rural areas

In addition to benefiting urban centers, the expressway will also impact rural areas positively. Many small villages such as Sangwade, Halsawade, Nerli, and Kaneriwadi will be connected by this new route. The presence of the expressway will open up new opportunities for businesses, farmers, and entrepreneurs in these areas. The quicker transportation of goods, services, and people will accelerate economic activity, leading to faster development in rural Maharashtra.

Longest highway in India

Once completed, the Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway will become one of the longest highways in India, spanning 802 km. This makes it even longer than the already significant Nagpur-Mumbai Expressway, which stretches 701 km. The expressway’s completion will mark a major milestone for Maharashtra, improving overall quality of life for millions of people by facilitating easier and faster travel.
