New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has once again launched a scathing attack on Israeli prosecutors over the ongoing corruption trial of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, labelling the proceedings a “political witch hunt.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump also referred to Netanyahu as a “war hero,” praising his efforts to eliminate the nuclear threat posed by Iran.

Trump expresses anguish over Netanyahu’s trial

President Trump sharply criticised the Israeli judiciary for what he described as unfair treatment of a sitting prime minister. “How is it possible that the Prime Minister of Israel can be forced to sit in a Courtroom all day long, over NOTHING (Cigars, Bugs Bunny Doll, etc.). It is a POLITICAL WITCH HUNT, very similar to the Witch Hunt that I was forced to endure. This travesty of “Justice” will interfere with both Iran and Hamas negotiations,” he wrote.

Trump further  stated that Washington has spent billions of dollars in aid to Israel, and stated that the US “was not going to stand for this.” Referring to past military cooperation, he added, “We just had a Great Victory with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu at the helm — And this greatly tarnishes our Victory. LET BIBI GO, HE’S GOT A BIG JOB TO DO!”

Netanyahu is not obligated to resign

Trump’s remarks follow the latest developments in Netanyahu’s ongoing legal battles. The Israeli Prime Minister faces three separate corruption cases, involving charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, as reported by Anadolu Agency. Netanyahu has denied all allegations, calling them “fake.”

Despite the charges, Netanyahu is not legally required to resign unless convicted by Israel’s Supreme Court.

Additionally, the International Criminal Court in Hague has also accused him of charges such as ” crime against humanity and war crimes”, for targeting innocent civilians in Gaza and enforcing them with brutal war policies like starvation.

President Trump has called for the immediate cancellation of Netanyahu’s corruption trials, reiterating his belief that they are politically motivated and aimed at derailing Netanyahu’s leadership. He further claimed that only the United States could “save” the Israeli Prime Minister.
