Kolkata: An Air India flight operating from Ahmedabad to London crashed on June 12 shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and it had 230 passengers and 12 crew members, totaling 242 people on board.
The plane departed from Ahmedabad airport at 1.17pm and was scheduled to arrive in London at 6.09pm. However, it went down moments after take-off, crashing into a densely populated neighbourhood close to the airport. London-based yoga enthusiast Jamie Meek was reportedly one of the passengers on board the aircraft. He was preparing to go back home after concluding his Gujarat visit and was reminiscing his “mind-blowing” memories in India.
In an Instagram post, he recalled the “magical experience” that he shared with his partner, Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek, and rued that it was their “last night in India”. He shared a final Instagram video just moments before boarding the Air India flight. In the now viral video, one can see a smiling Jamie at Ahmedabad airport saying goodbye to India and reflecting on his journey.

In the video, Jamie says, “We are at the airport just boarding. Goodbye India on a 10-hour flight back to London.” He added, “My biggest takeaway is to not lose your patience with your partner,” followed by a gentle smile and the words, “Going back happily, happily, happily calm.”
Apart from Jamie, there were 52 other British nationals onboard the flight. Also, it had 169 Indian nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens and 1 Canadian national on board.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “heartbreaking beyond words”. He said, “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it.” He added that ministers and authorities are working on-ground to assist those impacted.
