New Delhi: Home Minister Amit Shah has called a high-level meeting in Delhi next week of chief ministers and officials from Naxal-affected states hours after security forces gunned down 30 Naxalites in one of the biggest encounters of recent times in Chattisgarh’s Bastar region.

The meeting in Delhi will be chaired by the Home Minister on October 7 to discuss the plan ahead for eradicating the menace of Naxalites in the country and to formulate the strategy for security forces in this connection, sources said, adding larger operations are likely to be launched in the future.

The meeting will include representatives from Naxal-affected states, the Union home secretary, the IB Chief, DGs of paramilitary forces, the NIA DG, and other officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Chhattisgarh chief minister will also brief the Centre about Friday’s encounter.

Naxalism to be eradicated by 2026

During his visit to Chhattisgarh in August, Home Minister Shah said by 2026, Naxalites will be completely eradicated from the country. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is preparing a major plan with the states for this. According to sources, just as funding for terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir was stopped, a major action plan is being prepared to cut off the funding for Naxalites.

According to police, with this recent encounter, security forces have eliminated 185 Maoists in various gunfights across the Bastar region, which includes seven districts such as Dantewada and Narayanpur, so far this year.

On April 16, a major operation in Kanker district saw the deaths of 29 Naxalites, including several high-ranking cadres, in a clash with security personnel.
