Bhubaneswar/Kolkata: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warning for heavy rains for three days in coasts adjoining Odisha and West Bengal in view of severe cyclonic storm Dana which is likely to reach here by October 24.

The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal yesterday intensified and is expected to turn into a severe cyclonic storm by October 23. The weathermen warned that the system is likely to cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar in the night of October 24 and early morning October 25.

Severe Cyclonic Storm Dana: IMD issues warning for fishermen

The IMD has advised fishermen against going into the sea between October 23 and 25, while warning that the wind speed is likely to touch 60 kilometres per hour (kmph) at the Odisha-West Bengal coasts from Wednesday. The wind speed is likely to gradually increase to 100-110 kmph from October 24 night till October 25 morning.

“The system is very likely to cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island during the night of October 24 and early morning October 25 as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph with gusting 120 kmph,” said the IMD in its press release.

The weather department has also issued a red warning regarding heavy to very heavy rains (7 to 20 cm) and thunderstorm with lightning in Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Odisha for October 24.

School, colleges closed from October 23 to 25 in 14 Odisha districts

The state government has also announced to shut schools and other education institutes in about 14 affected districts for three days from October 23. Special Relief Commissioner DK Singh said the step has been taken as a precautionary measure during the storm.

The schools will remain closed in Ganjam, Puri, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Angul and Khordha districts.

Cyclone Dana: IMD issues alert for rain in West Bengal

IMD has also warned of heavy rain in the coastal districts of Purba and Paschim Medinipur and North and South 24 Parganas on October 23.

President Droupadi Murmu’s three-day visit to Odisha from Wednesday has also been postponed in view of the cyclone that is likely to hit the state’s coast on October 25.
